Special Situations

Special Situations

Brookfield's Special Situations Group invests in, and provides strategic assistance to, mid-market companies in North America that are experiencing financial or operational difficulties.

The Group’s strategy is to invest in businesses that capitalize upon Brookfield’s operating experience and long-term perspective to drive change and build value. Investment candidates typically have attractive tangible assets with significant operating leverage and an established business model, but are experiencing short-term distress. Focus industries include: industrial products, building materials, metals and mining, homebuilding, financial services, forest products, oil and gas and manufacturing.

The Group targets transactions of between $100 million and $250 million in debt or equity capital and in which Brookfield can play a meaningful role in the restructuring and governance of the recapitalized company. Investment transactions include recapitalizations, convertible debt financings, asset acquisitions and sponsorship of reorganizations, both in-and out-of-court.

The Group’s investment team includes many of Brookfield’s most senior operating, finance and legal professionals whose extensive experience in financial and operational restructuring has produced a more than 35-year track record of successful investing in distressed companies.
